Talking to a Loved One About Their Hearing Loss

Talking to a Loved One About Their Hearing Loss

Did you know that approximately 36 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss, ranging from mild to severe?

Hearing Loss doesn’t just affect the person who has it. It also affects spouses, family members and friends. From frustration with having to repeat things over and over to heartbreak at seeing someone you care about isolate themselves from the people and activities they love. Convincing a loved one to seek help is the right thing to do, but is never easy. Here are a few steps to follow to help the process go smoothly:

  1. Using the phrase “I’ve noticed recently…” is a great conversation starter. Give real examples that demonstrate the problem: like how you’ve noticed the grandchildren get frustrated when they can’t be heard.

  2. Gently remind them of their loss every time you “translate” or repeat something from them

  3. Suggest they take the online hearing test simulator at Starkey.com. Sometimes, people don’t realize what they’re experiencing is loss until they actually test it.
  1. Remind them they have nothing to lose and potentially everything to gain by seeing a hearing professional.
  1. Appointment Request with the professionals at our practice and offer to go with them on their visit.
